There was Turkmen delight for the second day in a row at the Senior Asian Weightlifting Championships in Ashgabat on Monday, with Kristina Shermetova grabbing two bronze medals in the women’s 53kg.

Women’s 53kg
China’s Wei Chengji made it look easy in the women’s 53kg. The 23-year-old Chinese swept all three events and lifted 200kg in total to take home three gold medals. Turkmen Kristina Shermetova took advantage, when Vietnam’s Thi My Dung Tran was not able to lift 102kg in three Clean & Jerk attempts and did not manage to reach the podium. Tran’s miss handed Shermetova both the Clean & Jerk and the Combined bronze with a total of 182kg. Thailand’s Supattra Kaewkhong confidently took silver with a total of 190kg.

Turkmen’s Shermetova set a personal record with 104kg in the Clean & Jerk, and said she did not pay attention to her rivals during the competition: “I did not know she [Tran] missed. I was concentrating on my own performance and did not look at the others.

“This is my first international medal at senior level. I have not competed over the last two years.”

Champion Wei Chengji was in tears coming off the podium with the gold medal: “I came here to Ashgabat to do my best. I was very nervous during competition, that’s why I burst into tears in the end. I felt I could have lifted more, after all my personal bests are 98kg and 120kg. I am not yet the number one 53kg lifter in China but I work hard to become the best.”

Women’s 58kg
Hsing-Chun Kuo (TPE) defended her 2016 Combined Asian title in the women’s 58kg successfully. The 23-year-old bronze medallist from the 2016 Rio Olympic Games totalled 241kg, an amount which would have won her the Olympic Gold by one kilogram. Kuo won both the Snatch and the Clean & Jerk events by a landslide. China’s Ou Lingli won the tight battle for silver with 219kg and Kim Su Ryon (PRK) had to settle for bronze with 218kg.

Champion Kuo reflected upon beating the Olympic golden total: “At the Olympics in Rio I felt very nervous, thus I had to settle for bronze. During all these months I was trying to build confidence and prove I am still the best. I gave a lot of lectures talking about Rio. Now I feel I can win at the World Championships in Anaheim in November.”
