Swimmer Atayev clinches second silver medal in Baku

Merdan Atayev added another silver medal to his collection at the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games as he finished second in the Men’s 50m Backstroke on Tuesday. After winning silver in the 100m Backstroke on Monday, Turkmenistan’s 2016 Olympic Games’ flag bearer stormed to his second podium in as many days, finishing in 25.82s over the single length distance to finish just behind Indonesia’s Gede Sudartawa (25.12s).
Also in the pool, Darya Semyonova qualified to the final of the Women’s 100m Breaststroke, finishing seventh in a race won by Turkey’s Viktoria Gunes.
Boxer Achilov advances to the semi-finals
Arslanbek Achilov booked a place in tomorrow’s semi-final of the Men’s Light Heavy (81kg) tournament with a striking victroy over Ivory Coast’s Adama Kone. The Turkmen boxer will face off against Turkey’s Cem Karlidag for a place in the final.
In the Men’s Light Welter (64kg) category, Zufar Saparbayev bowed out in the quarter-finals after a 5-0 defeat to Kazakhstan’s Kuan Kuatov, while Nursahet Pazzyev was the protagonist of a very close fight with Youness Gharroumi of Morocco, eventually losing his quarter-final bout 3-2.
Turkmen duo advances from first round
The whole contingent of Turkmenistan tennis players involved in today’s Men’s tournament made it safely through the first round. Yuriy Rogusskiy defeated Abdulla Fazeel of the Maldives 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 14 minutes, while Gerogiy Pochay emerged victorious from a true battle on court against Azerbaijan’s Filip Nikolic. Pochay won a marathon two hours and 51 minutes match 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, with the final set taking 99 minutes to come to a conclusion.
Rogusskiy will face Uzbekistan’s Fomin in the second round, while Pochay’s opponent will be Yuksel of Turkey.
Sprinters run out of steam
It was a tough day for the Turkmen sprinters competing at the Baku Olympic Stadium. Alisher Sadulayev was eliminated at the semi-final stage in the 100m, with compatriot Akmyrat Orazgeldiyev not starting his race. In the women’s contest, Valentina Meredova set a creditable season best of 12.03, but her time was not enough to book a place in the final, which was eventually won by Bahrain’s Hajar Alkhaldi.
The two Turkmen athletes participating in the first day of Taekwondo competitions bowed out after incredibly challenging contests. Muhammet Rozyyev was eliminated by Iran’s Mohammadsadegh Dehghanisaloomahalle in the Men’s 58kg round of 32, while Selbi Kichigulova went out 20:2 to Mariska Halinda of Indonesia in the Women’s 53kg.
The final athlete involved in the day’s competition was weightlifter Aman Meredov, who finished in eighth place in the Men’s 77kg category, lifting a total of 303kg (135 snatch, 168 clean & jerk).
Merdan Atayev’s second silver medal of these games bring Turkmenistan’s total tally to six medals (one gold, three silver, two bronze), placing the country in 11th place on the table. Turkey continues to lead the medal roster with 115 medals (43 gold, 40 silver, 32 bronze), ahead of host Azerbaijan with 81 (41, 24, 16). Iran is third with 37 medals, of which 10 are gold.
