Inspiring Ashgabat

The Senior Asian Weightlifting Championship, the WAKO Asian Kickboxing Championships, and the Central Asian Short Course Swimming Championships will all be taking place concurrently as part of the Inspiring Ashgabat Test Event Series.

The Inspiring Ashgabat event concept incorporates the three individual events while representing the 5th AIMAG motto of Health. Inspiration. Friendship.

Senior Asian Weightlifting Championships

The Senior Asian Weightlifting Championships competition starts on 23 April and runs through to 29 April at the Weightlifting Arena. Athletes will compete for 144 medals which will be awarded for snatch, clean & jerk and total in each bodyweight category. Asia has a strong pedigree in weightlifting with 31 of the 45 medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics being awarded to Asian countries.

Weightlifting

The ultimate test of strength, where the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates. There are two weightlifting techniques: the snatch and the clean and jerk. The snatch involves lifting the bar directly from the floor above the head in a single movement. The clean and jerk is a two-stage movement, lifting the bar from the ground to shoulder height, then lifting it above the head. The athletes have three attempts to perform each technique. The combined score from the best snatch and the best clean and jerk for each lifter are added together to determine the final score.

Athletes are categorised by weight with eight categories for men and eight for women. The success of an athlete is largely dependent on their power, but there is also a focus on technique, speed, timing, balance and flexibility.

Quick Facts

  • The origin of weightlifting dates back to ancient times in countries such as Greece, where they were seen as the ultimate test of male strength
  • The first weightlifting world championships took place in England in 1891
  • Athletes can lift up to three times their body weight during competition
  • In the men’s competition, the barbell weighs 20kg. In the women’s it weights 15kg

Central Asian Short Course Swimming Tournament

In addition to these international competitions the Aquatics Federation of Turkmenistan have organised the first ever Central Asian Short Course Swimming Tournament which will consist of an invitational short course (25) competition in the new Indoor Aquatics Centre. Athletes from neighbouring countries Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Iran and Afghanistan will be competing across a number of individual and relay events on 26–27 April 2017.

Swimming

Swimming is a popular Olympic sport, athletes will compete for medals in the four main strokes – freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly as well as competing in relay events. The term short course is used to identify a pool that is 25m in length.

Event distances range from 50m to 1500m and the winner is the person that finishes the race in the fastest time.

Quick Facts

  • Short course records are traditionally faster than long course records. This is assumed to be connected to increased number of wall push-offs, where speed is greatest.
  • The fastest and most efficient swim stroke is the freestyle.
